Day 3 was on friday, 3.5 on saturday. It's Thursday again, so I need to hurry to get this post done...
Day 3 was a lot about trends. How they evolve, and what they mean. Designers keep at their own lines, and now they are in the trend, but in a few years that same designer will be out of the trend. The given example was Kaat Tilley. She's bee enormously famous in the 90s, but then faded away, and she's enjoying a renewed interest in her designs these years. (See her current collection at http://www.kaattilley.com/)
So, we did quite some time to see and analyse what the current trends are, and where they came from. From memory (my notes are in my car, to make sure I don't forget them tomorrow), they are these: new volumes, layers, gold, tartan, modernism (simple designs - androgyn), high waists, and one I am forgetting.
The Elijah guy didn't show up. Weird. I wonder how these people do this. The course was full in July, and costs 200 euro. So, not showing up, or giving up means this whole effort is wasted. Together with Elijah, Geert had joined our class, but he sat on the other side of Ostara, so I didn't really get to talk to him yet. We formed a group of 3, sort of, so I got to say some words to him now. Great sweet normal guy. We had a new guy in again (he had a nice name, but well I forgot).
Ostara did -of course- know what her name means. And for who's been waiting: it's the feast of spring. The feast of the new life! Now talk about a happy coincidence. I still very much like her. The teacher was not very enthousiast with my current design of stole - but it was my first draft, and I hadn't found how to make it round yet. I redrew it this week, and found a way to make a proper fashion drawing, and in the while make it a round stole. I'ld instinctly call it a cape, but that doesn't seem to be a problem. Other students had a design that I would give other names, but they are good.
Day 3.5? Well, we had an excursion to the Mode Museum (http://www.momu.be -yes, in dutch, but it's a provincial institute) in Antwerp. This is the biggest fashion musuem in Belgium, which will soon be lead by Walter Van Beirendonck (http://www.waltervanbeirendonck.com - Mens collections only I think). It was very interesting, and I mostly remember an awesome, very old, and fully handmade gown in chantilly lace. Really awesome creation. If anyone visits Belgium, you must (must!) have a visit at the museum. Just because you can say you visited the fashion musuem in Antwerp. There's a bookstore attached to the MoMu.
Tomorrow, I hope we get started with Fashion history, because I'm very interested to get some more information in it. Ah, and a little question for people who are experienced in industrial fashion and EGL/EGA: should the stole be hemmed or not. Try to convince me with factual reasoning. |
